How do I get involved???
There are tons of ways you can participate in roller derby!!

CNYRD is ALWAYS willing to take on new skaters, refs, and support staff. We do a
recruitment drive every 3-4 months, but even if we're not running a drive, you can get
involved and be ready to start when we are bringing in fresh meat. We have nice
derby-style rental skates available, and loaner pads and helmets so that you can try it
out. You won't be doing contact drills right away, but come prepared in clothes you can
exercise in and a mouth guard.

Players:
We encourage you to come watch a practice before you try it out to see what you're in
for. Check the website for our next newbie start date, and sometime before that come
watch. Let our
recruitment person know that you plan to be there on the next start
date. Before you skate there are some forms to fill out, and you should be prepared to
pay for a skating insurance policy. You should read our
New Skater Information
Packet
. Please print a copy and fill out your emergency contact info and a tryout
waiver and bring with you to your first practice.

The probationary period for newbies consists of 12 beginner practices held weekly.
Each recruit is required to make 10 out of 12 of these, held recurring weeknights from
7-10pm (day TBA, please ask). After the first 5-6 newbie practices you'll also be invited
to join into some advanced practices, and in the space of 12 weeks you'll also attend 3
advanced practices. That's 13 total practices in 12 weeks. Sounds intimidating? Many
of us skate 3+ times per week, compete on weekends, go to local rinks' open skates,
and do off skates training at home. Once you're addicted, you'll never want to stop!

As stated above, we do have some rental skates and loaner pads. But we expect you
to quickly get your own so that there's never a shortage. There are suggestions in the
New Skater Information Pack for gear and we're happy to provide suggestions.

Once you have started your skating insurance policy, successfully met the required
newbie practices, have all your gear in place, and are able to pass a skating skills test,
you are eligible for draft onto a team and full league member status. All members are
required to be active on at least one of our committees--- we all volunteer our time,
and in order to keep the league running as a business, everyone has to contribute.
Once you have met the criteria you will be allowed to select your derby name and
number.

Here's some other useful information you should see beforehand:
WFTDA rules
WFTDA referee hand signals

Referees:
So you want to be a referee for CNYRD? Love to blow a whistle? Yell like a maniac? Or
maybe you just really like zebra print tights. Yes, you DO have to wear full pads and a
helmet. The only difference from the competitors is that no mouthguard is required.
BUT- if you like to occasionally get in on the fun of drills like the rest of us, you'll want
to have one handy anyway. You will also need a zebra shirt. We prefer Fox 40 brand
whistles for their ear-splitting qualities. See the links above for rules and hand signals
and study them till your eyes hurt, then do it some more. Contact the
head ref and get
involved!

Non-Skating Officials (NSO's)
There are plenty of ways to help out as an official without having to skate or wear
pads. We can always use dedicated scorekeepers, penalty trackers, stats people, etc.
Again, contact the
head ref and get involved!
